IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Audrey D.
Heaphy
August 1, 1929 – November 30, 2025
Audrey Dolores Heaphy (née Hugel), 96, passed away peacefully after a long and full life. Born on August 1, 1929, in Queens, New York, she was the eldest daughter of Audrey and Charles Hugel and grew up in the neighborhoods of Jamaica and Flushing with her younger sisters, Marilyn and June.
After graduating from Jamaica High School, Audrey worked in Manhattan while attending Cambridge Business School. She went on to build a long career as an executive assistant dedicating 30 years at Film Counselors and 12 years at the Insurance Information Institute in New York City.
In 1962, Audrey married Charles Francis Heaphy, Jr. at the Lutheran Church in Jamaica, Queens. Together they raised their three children—Charles Francis Heaphy III, and twin daughters Alison Gates Heaphy and Christine Heaphy—in Pelham, New York. Audrey was an active member of Huguenot Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she formed lasting friendships and participated in many aspects of church life. While working full-time, she remained fully devoted to her family, always placing their needs first with selfless love and quiet strength. She was a powerful role model for her children.
After Audrey retired, she and Charles moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, where they spent 10 wonderful years filled with travel, church and community involvement, and new friendships. They later relocated to The Loomis Village in South Hadley, Massachusetts, to be closer to family. Loomis became Audrey’s home for the next 20 years, and she was its longest-residing resident. She remained active in many committees, Bible study, and her local church, Center Church, First Congregational Church UCC of South Hadley. Her kindness and warm smile made her beloved by residents and staff alike; she was a dear friend to many and people truly brightened when they saw her coming.
Audrey is survived by her three children: Charles III and his wife Wei Nie, Alison and her partner Dan Wall, and Christine; five grandchildren: Erika, Abby, Ana, Willa, and Miles; her sister June Brandt; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 2008, and sister Marilyn Winans.
Audrey will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and a woman of generosity and deep compassion. She lived her life with humility, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family and church. Her gentle spirit endures in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
