Barbara (Calkins) Fournier, 80, died Friday March 12 th at the Elaine Center in Hadley, MA. She was born in Holyoke, the daughter of the late Irving and Dorothy (Fuller) Calkins. In her early years, she lived and played on the Mount Holyoke College campus and later made her home with the love of her life, Charles Fournier in South Hadley. She worked tirelessly to provide a wonderful home for her three children and spent many weekends and vacations camping, boating and enjoying the beach in Wells, ME. When her children were grown, she worked at Mount Holyoke College at the Willits-Hallowell Center and later at Validata: in Amherst. In retirement, she enjoyed traveling with the love of her life, Charlie Fournier, who predeceased her just two short months ago. She made friends easily and those that knew her enjoyed her quick laugh, her engaging smile, and her endless generosity. Her positive spirit was a constant source of encouragement and support for anyone fortunate enough to cross her path. She leaves two sons Raymond Fournier and his wife Mary Ann and Charles Fournier Jr. and his wife Cynthia, her daughter Cynthia Legare and her husband Donald, her brother Robert Calkins and his wife Kerrie and six grandchildren Andrew Fournier, Gregory Fournier, Erica Macedo, Amber Legare, Kacey Legare, and Sarah Fournier. She also leaves her great-granddaughter, Charlotte, who brought her immeasurable joy. In addition to her husband, Charles, she was predeceased by, her brother William Calkins and her sister Nancy (Calkins) Culver. She also leaves a large and much-loved extended family of nieces and nephews. Many of the friends of her children regarded her as their 'second mom' and will miss her terribly. The funeral Mass will be Saturday March 20 th at 11:00 am in St. Patrick's Church in South Hadley followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the Mass at church on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Curran-O'Brien Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
