IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bernard J.
Smyth
September 27, 1931 – May 31, 2019
Bernard Joseph Smyth passed away peacefully on Friday May 31 at his home in South Hadley. Bernie was born in Springfield on September 27, 1931. He was the son of Lena Reagan and Bernard Thomas Smyth. In May of 1958, he married Geraldine Hart from Amherst, and in 1962 they settled in South Hadley. Bernie is survived by his wife Geraldine, their children, his oldest son, Bernard Joseph, Jr., his daughter Margaret Picornell (and her husband Miguel Picornell), and Bernie's youngest child, Paul (and his wife Katya) Smyth, his grandchildren, Christina and Sofia Picornell, and Desdemona and Stephen Smyth, as well as his sister Ann Marie LeBel of Wilbraham. Bernie served as a probation officer in Hampden County for more than 30 years, retiring as chief probation officer of the Hampden Superior Court in 1997. Bernie possessed a warm generous soul, and he had a great sense of humor. While Bernie's interests included reading, golfing, and traveling, his great love was spending time with his family, especially at his favorite sites to include Fenway park and beaches on the Cape. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Bernie's family and friends miss him dearly. Friends and family may meet Tuesday at 10 am in St. Patrick's Church for the Funeral Mass. Calling hours at the Curran-O'Brien Funeral Home are Monday 4:00 to 7:00pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Church. For more information please go to curranobrien.com.
