Donald W. Hass 84 died December 2nd at his beloved home on the Connecticut River in South Hadley. He was born at home on April 1, 1940 in the Fairview section of Chicopee to parents Carl Hass and Una (Clark) Hass Haskins. After joining the Boy Scouts at a young age he reached the level of Order Of The Arrow, later becoming a scout master in Fairview. Donald graduated from Chicopee High School in 1958. He was a US Navy veteran serving from 1958 to 1962 as a signalman aboard a destroyer escort and guided missile frigate. He was employed for 33 years as a silk screen artist and eventually was group leader of his department at the National Blank Book Company in Holyoke and later their Avery factories in Springfield and Chicopee. In 1995 he took early retirement, turning his hobby into a full time business as an antique and "junk" dealer at the local flea markets in Hadley, Northampton, Chicopee and Holyoke. He operated and advertised as Attics & Cellars Antiques, opening a store on High Street in Holyoke in 1989. Donald loved animals, enjoyed feeding the birds and giving attention to dogs and cats that met him. He is survived by his son Benjamin Hass of South Hadley, sister Brenda Joslyn, her husband Al and her son Jeff Chouinard, niece Dee Zalegowski all of Vero Beach, Florida and niece Lynn Henchey of West Springfield. Besides his parents he was pre deceased by his wife Carol Hass of South Hadley, baby daughter Laura, sister Shirley Collinge and her husband Sam of Vero Beach and their sons David Collinge of Millbury, MA and Scott Collinge of Marysville, TN. Calling hours will be held on Saturday December 14 at O'Brien Family Funeral Home 33 Lamb St South Hadley from 10 to 11am, ending with a ceremony officiated by Reverend Joe DeGrande including honors from the US Navy. Everyone is encouraged to stay and speak publicly if you like with any good memories you have about Donald. His burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, 191 Montcalm St, Chicopee MA 01020, in honor of his family's communication there throughout his life.
