Obituary

Edna May (Gledhill) Carter, 94, of South Hadley, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. She was the beloved wife of the late William H. Carter.

Born in Stamford, Connecticut, Edna was the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Annie L. (Gilvear) Gledhill. She was a proud United States Army veteran who served two years in the Women’s Army Corps at West Point, NY as a typist. Throughout her working years, Edna was employed at Rucki & Son’s Furniture in Chicopee, MA as a bookkeeper.

Edna was actively involved with the South Hadley High School Band parents organization and the Royal Columbian Drum Corps. She loved to be outside working in her garden and enjoyed traveling with her family, working on puzzles, and making crafts. Many know of her legendary Department 56 Christmas Village that she proudly showcased 365 days of the year. These interests brought her much happiness throughout her life.

Edna is survived by her loving daughter, Dawn Gilman and her husband Stacy of Southbridge, MA; five grandchildren, Philip Wheeler, William Miller Jr. (BJ), Lauren Smith, Jonathan Miller, and Jennifer Miller; and one great-grandchild. In addition to her late husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Irene Gledhill, and her two daughters, Gail Vogel and Nadine Wheeler.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the O'Brien Family Funeral Home, 33 Lamb Street, South Hadley, MA.
