Edna F. (Varley) Delisle, 100, of Chicopee, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Holyoke on May 1, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Rose (Aube) Varley. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Roland Delisle on August 1, 2007.
Described by her family as an "ambassador of joy," Edna had a special way of brightening the lives of those around her. Incredibly social, outgoing, and full of life, she could strike up a conversation with anyone and make friends wherever she went. A quick phone call with Edna, also known as Meema by her loving family, could easily turn into hours of chatting. She never missed a birthday, always prioritizing a phone call to sing or pick out a card with a beautiful verse. Fiercely independent and always on the go, she embraced life with an enthusiasm that never seemed to fade.
Above all else, Edna's most important role was that of a homemaker, dedicating herself to caring for her family. Her many talents extended beyond the home, as she also worked throughout her life as a florist, poll worker, bulk mail postal worker, and seamstress. She was an incredible cook, especially known for her homemade meat pies and spaghetti sauce, which were family favorites, as well as a wonderful artist with a remarkably creative mind.
Edna loved staying active and was always ready for a good game. Whether it was cards, bingo, Scrabble, or Yahtzee, she enjoyed the fun and companionship that came with playing along with her family and friends, or with her fellow members of the Fairview Golden Agers. She also loved trips to the casino and rarely missed her nightly favorites, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! Dancing and singing brought her great happiness, and she never passed up an opportunity to enjoy herself and the company of others. Her joyful spirit and love of people will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Edna leaves behind her five children, Gary Delisle of Chicopee, Barbara Laroche and her husband Keith of Chicopee, Richard Delisle of Ludlow, Daniel Delisle of Hudson, NY, and Susan Gilpatrick of Granby. She also leaves her loving grandchildren, Laurie Zahr and her husband Jeff, Jessica Culver, Kerri Roy and her husband Charles, Kenny Delisle, Melissa D'Aniello, Rebekah Radzunas and her husband Mike, Zack Delisle and his wife Cait, Patrick Delisle, Evan Gilpatrick and his fiancée Sherrie, Adam Gilpatrick, Samantha Gilpatrick-Banas and her husband Trevor, and Haley Gilpatrick. She also leaves 18 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. In addition to her husband, Edna was predeceased by her 11 brothers and sisters and three grandchildren, Jeff Delisle, Nick Delisle, and Kristen Smith.
Calling hours will be Friday, November 13, from 4–6 PM at O'Brien Family Funeral Home, 33 Lamb Street, South Hadley. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home Saturday, November 14, at 9 AM for a procession to a 10 AM Funeral Mass at St. Anne's Church in Chicopee. Burial will follow in Precious Blood Cemetery, South Hadley.
