Eugene Robert Berthiaume, affectionately known to family and friends as "Bob" and "Red," passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Holyoke, he was the son of the late Louis Berthiaume and Marguerite (Cote) Goncalves. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960. His service remained one of the greatest sources of pride throughout his life, and he was rarely seen without his cherished USMC hat. His unwavering devotion to the Marine Corps and the values it instilled in him never faded.
On January 14, 1961, Bob married the love of his life, the former Gayle E. West. Together they shared 65 years of love, devotion, and partnership while raising a close-knit family.
Bob began his career in the shipping and receiving industry before transitioning to the transportation industry in 1985. He retired as a truck driver from Overnite Transportation in Springfield, where he worked for many years until his retirement.
Following retirement, Bob became a familiar face at the Chicopee Senior Center and was a proud member of AMVETS. He was known for his generous spirit and willingness to help others. A pillar of his condominium community, Bob could often be found driving neighbors to appointments, picking up their mail, or simply lending a helping hand whenever it was needed. Whether you knew him as Bob or Red, he will be remembered for his kindness, dependability, quiet generosity, sharp sense of humor, and deep love for his family and country.
Besides his beloved wife, Gayle E. (West) Berthiaume, he leaves his children, David Berthiaume and his wife Pamela of Athens, Alabama, Beverly Germain and her fiancé Stephen Rodolakis of Springfield, Bonnie Clark of Holyoke, and Steven R. Berthiaume of Chicopee; his grandchildren, Christopher Berthiaume and his wife Jennifer, Steven Berthiaume and his wife Ru'bia, Scott Fontaine, Cody Gonçalves, Devon Gonçalves, Ryan Clark and his wife Ashley, Weston Clark and his wife Lauren, Brandon Giles and his wife Brianna, and Joseph Berthiaume; his great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Berthiaume, Cassidy Pratt, Conner Berthiaume, Lakin Barnes, Anthony Berthiaume, Liam Berthiaume, Gabriel Fontaine, Remy Fontaine, Brayden Clark, Olivia Clark, and Riley Clark; his brother, Albert Berthiaume and his wife Carol; his sister, Linda Sullivan; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, neighbors, and dear friends.
Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his step father August Goncalves, grandson, Jonathan Berthiaume; his sister, Louise Gagne and her husband Jack; and his brother, Thomas Berthiaume.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at O'Brien Family Funeral Home, 33 Lamb Street, South Hadley.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a graveside service with military honors on Tuesday, July 28, at 10:00 a.m. at Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bob's memory to a veterans organization of the donor's choice.
