Obituary

Evelyn "Penny" Sigda, 93, formerly of St. Augustine, Florida, passed away on February 19, 2023 in Jacksonville, Florida . Born in Massachusetts, Penny was a graduate of South Hadley High School, and received a nursing degree from Holyoke Hospital School of Nursing (RN), and a B.S.N. from Boston University . Penny was dedicated to her nursing career throughout her lifetime. She began as an obstetrics nurse in a hospital setting, and took on varied roles when her husband Ray's job took the family overseas. In Northern Greece, Penny provided primary medical care to the staff of the Voice of America's broadcast facility; in Thailand, Penny served as a nurse at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok. Following her husband's transfer back to the United States, Penny obtained her Master's degree from East Carolina University while also teaching nursing classes there, and then worked in the local public health department. Even after her husband retired and they moved to Florida, Penny continued working in public health as a school nurse and as a visiting nurse. After Penny retired, she dedicated herself to competitive bridge games, service to her church and her family. She was a communicant at Corpus Christi Catholic Church for over 30 years, where she initiated and ran the parish's program for feeding the homeless, and was a member of the Ladies Guild. Most of all, retirement brought her the great joy of being a loving grandmother to her five grandchildren. Her family will remember Penny's strong faith, her courage, her excellent cooking, and her youthful spirit (including a willingness to break into dance along with her grandchildren). She is survived by her daughters Mary Hearn and Susan Sigda Lotocki , her son Joseph Sigda, five grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews . Penny was predeceased by her husband Raymond Sigda in 1992. Funeral services will be private at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your local food pantry or charity that serves the homeless. The O'Brien Family Funeral Home in South Hadley, MA has been entrusted with the arrangements. For more information or to make online condolences please go to obrienfamilyfh.com.
