Obituary

Frank A. Hudgik, 96, died Saturday June 26 th at home. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late Frank and Fay (Knowles) Hudgik. He was employed by Hano Business Forms for 44 years, serving as Direct Sales Manager for 25 years. He served two and a half years during WWII in the Pacific Theater of War, participating in the Battle of Iwo Jima as a member of the Seabees, holding the rank of Coxswain. Frank was a member of; Mt. Holyoke Lodge of Free Masons, Scottish Rites Bodies, Melha Shriners and Legion of Honor; The American Legion; the Council on Aging and was Chairman of the Granby S.A.L.T. Council. He served the Town of Granby 6 years (1971-1977) as Chairman of the Planning Board and was instrumental in the adoption of comprehensive by-laws by the town. He served 9 years as selectman (1977-1986) and was elected to the Board of Assessors in 1991 where he served 9 three years terms. Frank served as Chairman of the Council on Aging and served on the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority Advisory Board for over 14 years. He served several years as chairman of the Democratic Town Committee and was treasurer and membership secretary of the Granby Historical Association. Frank was a member of the United Methodist Church of South Hadley since 1954, serving as lay speaker conducting worship services and preached in a number of area churches. He served as District Lay Leader for the Connecticut/Western Mass district for three years. He was an avid golfer, serving as an officer in the Melha Shriner's Golf League and was awarded a number of golf trophies. When asked why he was so involved in community activities, Frank replied "It's because the Town of Granby has given so much to me and my family that I feel a responsibility to give something back".  He was predeceased by his wife Jean (Lewis) in 2000 and by his brother Ronald. He leaves three sons Steven Hudgik and his wife Eileen of Portland, Oregon, Mark Hudgik of Granby and Paul Hudgik and his wife Barbara of Keene, NH, two daughters Lisa Smigiel and her husband Ted of Granby and Kristen Hudgik of Providence, RI, 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. The funeral service will be Tuesday July 6th at 10:00 am in the United Methodist Church in South Hadley followed by burial with Military Honors in West Street Cemetery.
