Obituary

Geoffrey William Nelson died peacefully in South Hadley on November 7th, 2022 at the age of 90. He was born in Colorado Springs, CO in 1932, as the only child of Margaret Price and William F. Nelson. After his father's early death, he and his mother returned east and settled in Northampton, MA to be closer to family. He attended Fountain Valley School in CO for the first two years of high school and then transferred to Exeter Academy in NH. Geoffrey then went on to Yale University, graduating in 1953. After his experience with the ROTC at Yale, he joined the Air Force in 1953 and served 3 years as a pilot. Thereafter, he attended Yale Law School, graduating in 1959 and joined the Murtha Cullina LLP law practice in Hartford Connecticut until 1996, practicing corporate and securities law. Geoffrey was active with the CT Bar Association as well as serving on the boards of Hartford Ballet Company, United Way and the Mt Sinai Hospital Association. After retiring from his law firm, Geoffrey went on to consult at other healthcare and manufacturing businesses in CT and MA. Geoffrey will be remembered for his tenacious attention to the intricacies of the law, stories about his formative years in Colorado and the Rockies, proud service in the Air Force, pride for Yale, passion for boating, and ultimately his steadfast devotion to reading the New York Times daily, in its entirety. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) and her husband James Pratt of Needham, MA, their children Audrey and Ian; step-daughter Susannah Gregory and Drew Shields of South Hadley, MA and their three sons, Jack, Tyler & Jake; and son Bill Nelson and wife Lisa of NY, NY, and their daughters Lily and Alexandra.
