Obituary

Grace M. Hooton, 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 18th, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Holyoke, to the late Eurenia (Myer) and Robert Ryer. Grace grew up in South Hadley and lived there her entire life. After graduating from South Hadley High School, she went on to obtain her nursing degree at Holyoke Hospital and her associate degree from Holyoke Community College. She worked for many years as an RN in the Holyoke Hospital Med/Surg Department, and after "retirement," in the office of Dr. Frank Croke. Throughout her life, Grace was an active member of the Second Congregational, Falls Congregational, and First Congregational Churches. She was a member of multiple organizations including the Rainbow Girls and the Pioneer Valley Quilt Guild. She also volunteered as a church usher, poll worker, and with Food for Friends. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, and making other needle crafts for her family and numerous charities. She is predeceased by her siblings, Robert Ryer III, George Ryer, Dorothy Hurley, Francis Ryer, Harold Ryer, Eugene Ryer, Elizabeth (Betty) Thompson, Kenneth Ryer, and Henry Ryer. Grace will be missed by all who knew her, including her loving husband of 67 years, Donald E. Hooton and their beloved dog, Lucy; three daughters, Susan and husband Mark Levreault, Janice and husband Mark Racine, and Donna and husband Hitesh Shroff; and her 3 grandchildren, Austin Levreault, Samantha and husband Brian O'Hare, and Kavita Shroff. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Monday July 24th at the First Congregational Church, 1 Church St., South Hadley, followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
