Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Henry L. Carter, 91, from Springfield, MA, on November 10th,2024. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. A native of Holyoke, Massachusetts, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 and served proudly for 20 years attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Part of his time in the Army included service in Korea during the end of the Korean Conflict. After traveling around the world he eventually settled in Springfield where he raised eight children with his wife of 60 years, Katina A (Paleologous), who predeceased him in 2014. Henry leaves behind his children, Henry R, Gisele Sotolotto, (Husband Anthony), Michael, William, Robert (wife Heidi), Billy (wife Dennette), Earl (deceased) and Maria DeMusis. He also leaves behind his sister, Blanche Warner and her two children and their families, and Richard Warden and his family. Henry was the proud grandfather of sixteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, whom he loved to spend all the time he could with. Henry was a talented carpenter and craftsman and passed on that knowledge to many of his children and grandchildren. After retiring from the Army, he worked for many years as a maintenance man for several banks and realtors and was highly thought of by everyone he met as a kind, caring, and loving soul. He Loved his career in the Army and never sought recognition for any of the service he provided: he believed it was his privilege to serve our country for so long. He always had a funny story to tell about being in the Service or some shenanigans that he participated in as a young man. He would spend hours with family and loved ones playing cards or "Wahoo" and would welcome anyone into his home night or day for a cup of coffee and some good advice. He always had time for people when they needed help and showed love and compassion to everyone, especially those who were down on their luck. Henry had a wonderful outlook and believed that no matter what happened, he was blessed to have everything life had given him. A memorial service for Henry will be held at the Agawam Veterans Memorial Cemetery on November 20th, at 3:00pm. Please consider making a donation in Henry's memory to Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control & Adoption Center in Springfield, MA. The O'Brien Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
