Hunter Isaiah Wood, age 7, of South Hadley, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on December 8, 2025. Though his time on this earth was far too short, Hunter filled every day with a spirit that was bigger and brighter than anything around him. He was courageous, funny, endlessly loving, and had a way of bringing people together simply by being himself.
Hunter was the beloved son of Naomi Wood Merchant and Jason Merchant of South Hadley, and the cherished little brother of Hailey Alvaro and Charlotte Merchant, all of South Hadley. He was the adored grandson of Christine (Mimi) and David (Poppa) Wood of South Hadley, as well as Judy (Nonni) and Allen (Poppa) Hunt of Springfield. He was the nephew of many loving aunts and uncles, and the beloved godson of Kait Kulpa. He leaves behind many cousins who loved him deeply, his beloved service dog Cici, and an entire extended community who stood with him throughout his journey.
Hunter had a special bond with his wrestling family, who became his big brothers, big sisters, uncles, and aunts in every way that mattered. He was equally embraced by his Henry J. Skala School family, where he was known for his warm smile, resilient heart, and his remarkable gift for “subitizing” math — something that never failed to impress his teachers.
Hunter had a world of interests that reflected his big personality. He loved wrestling — especially John Cena — and could often be found cheering on his favorite moves. He adored dinosaurs, loved music ranging from Ozzy Osbourne to The Beatles, and was happiest when playing video games or running around the playground with his friends. His closest friends — Noah, Declan, and Erik — brought him endless joy. He was also surrounded by a team of people who cared for him deeply, including his social worker Kai, his hospice nurse Cait, and many others who supported him with love and compassion.
His favorite adventures included trips to Mystic, Connecticut, and he enjoyed watching “COPS” and “Ghost Hunters,” always curious and quick to laugh. Halloween was his favorite holiday — the costumes, the excitement, and the magic of it all suited him perfectly. Above all, Hunter will be remembered for his beautiful, infectious smile, a smile that lit up every room and every heart it met.
