John F. (Jack) Root, 95 years old, passed away peacefully in hospice care at Renaissance Manor on Cabot in Holyoke on August 29, 2023. He was born in Holyoke, MA on November 2, 1927, to Arthur Root and Bertha Foster Root. He was a graduate of Holyoke High School and Holyoke Junior College (now Holyoke Community College). He trained to be an engineer in the Army. He then attended UMass-Amherst. He was an engineer at Westinghouse in Springfield, MA, then at Nokia/Maillefer in South Hadley, MA. Jack was an avid photographer and fisherman. He was fascinated by aviation, construction, and understanding how things worked, and loved Big Band music. He had a delightful sense of humor, which he retained until the very end.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ann (Marcotte) Root, their daughters Nancy (Thomas) Miller of Wisconsin, Susan Huetteman of Florida, Julie (David) Akers of New Hampshire, Lynne (Bryan) Volk of California; and grandchildren: Racheal (Timothy) Duggan, Nicholas Huetteman, Graham Akers, and Lucas Miller, along with many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Renaissance Manor and Beacon Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care. There will be a celebration of life on Saturday October 7th at a time and place to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's name may be sent to Beacon Hospice in Springfield, MA.
