John D. Toth, 87, passed away peacefully from this life on Friday, March 6th at the Fisher House in Amherst, Massachusetts, surrounded by his loving family. He was the youngest of eight children, born in Holyoke, son of the late Michael and Veronica (Gulash) Toth. He grew up on the Toth Farm on Mosier Street in South Hadley that is now the Leaping Well Nature Trail, until moving to Granby where he lived for over 50 years. He graduated from South Hadley High School in 1951, where he played on the State Championship Basketball Team. His letterman jacket now hangs in the South Hadley High School trophy case. He enlisted in the Army shortly after high school, serving in Germany. He was employed for O'Connell Construction as a mason, working on many buildings including the high rises at UMASS, Amherst. An avid runner who took up jogging later in life, John ran the Boston Marathon three times and the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Road Race numerous times. Most of all, John loved his family. He enjoyed attending family gatherings and all the grandchildren's many events. He was predeceased by his loving wife Gladys (Boczon) Toth. He leaves behind his children Judy Maiolo and her husband Joseph of Chicopee, Lynne Janis and her husband Joseph of West Springfield, John Toth of Holyoke, Gary Toth and his wife Lori Jean of Granby, Willian Toth of Holyoke and Lori Toth of Chicopee, his sister Helen Soltys of Holyoke, eight grandchildren Sarah Fontaine and her husband David, Lyndsey Roberts and her husband Jamie, Amanda Peloquin, Edward and Jake Janis, and Jonathan, Raymond and Michael Toth, two great granddaughters Grace Fontaine and Finley Roberts, and many nieces and nephews. He also loved his canine friends and companions Penelope, Hadji and the late Zoey. The family would like to extend an extra thank you to the Fisher House in Amherst for the care and support during John's final days. The funeral will be Wednesday, March 11th starting with calling hours at Curran-O'Brien Funeral Home, 33 Lamb St., South Hadley from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, followed by Mass in St. Rose de Lima Church, Gratten St., Chicopee at 11:00 am.
