Obituary

Feisty and independent-minded to the end, Joyce Blackmer Dubuc passed into eternity on Friday September 11, 2020, at the age of 98. A lifelong communicant of St. Patrick's Parish in South Hadley, where she raised 8 children with her husband, Arthur "Cook" Dubuc, Joyce became a Eucharistic Minister almost the minute that women were able to be in that role. She served for about 20 years and was also a member of the Parish Council . Joyce was a registered nurse for over 40 years, having graduated from Providence Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She was a district nurse, a delivery room nurse at both Providence and Holyoke Hospitals, and a South Hadley school nurse in her career. After retiring from the South Hadley School System in 1985, she became an Ombudsman for Westmass Eldercare in 1991, where she worked part-time for several years. Joyce and Cook enjoyed 46 years together before his death in 1989, having been married in Monterrey, CA, in 1943, after the 21-year-old Joyce traveled cross-country by train with her mother and aunt to get there. When WWII was over, they enjoyed their large and ever-growing family, their wonderful friends, their yearly summer weeks or month on Cape Cod, some winters in Fort Walton Beach, FL, a Caribbean cruise, their children's and grandchildren's sporting and artistic events, and community celebrations. Joyce was also predeceased by 2 of her daughters, Beth (2009) Dubuc Jedzyniak (Frank), and Mary Lou (2011) Dubuc Lefebvre (Stephen); by a grandson, Joseph Maiolo; by her parents, Cora (MacKenzie) and Paul William Blackmer, and her in-laws, Exoria (Gelineau) and Arthur Dubuc; by her sister, Eunice Blackmer Brainard and her husband Jack; by her brother, Paul William Blackmer, Jr. and his wife Ruth; by many sisters- and brothers-in-law; as well as by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and great friends. Among those friends were her best friend all of her life, Marjorie Rainaud, and her good friends Margaret Smiledge, Helen LaPorte, and Margaret McDonnell. She leaves her daughters, Linda Dubuc Maiolo (Benjamin Young) and Joyce Dubuc Motroni (David Motroni), her sons Richard Arthur Dubuc (Julie Spencer Robinson), Arthur Paul Dubuc, Thomas James Dubuc (Judy Kamont), and Paul William Dubuc (Tracy Meehan Dubuc).
