Obituary

Margaret (Peggy) O'Shaughnessy Amato, 89, peacefully passed on Tuesday August 16th, surrounded by her loving family.  Peggy was the oldest of eight children born to Patrick and Catherine O'Shaughnessy. Peggy was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts and raised in Springfield. She was very proud of her Irish heritage growing up on Hungry Hill (the home of the Irish).  She graduated from Commerce High School and went to work for New England Tel and Tel as a telephone operator.  Within a year, she met and married her husband, Marco Amato, Sr., and had six children. She was predeceased by Marco; three of her four brothers: William, Joseph and Gerald O'Shaughnessy; and her son, Michael Amato, Sr. She loved being a mother and homemaker and was very good at both.  She was active at her children's schools and was a great hockey mom.  It was said that she had more ice time than her sons.  Her love of everything Irish was very well known by all.  Saturday mornings the Irish music played as she danced and sang. It was a joy watching her face light up as she sang her favorite tunes. St. Patrick's Day was her favorite holiday, where she never left the dance floor! Cape Cod was where she spent her summers. Her family was everything to her! So many fabulous memories of boating, fishing, clamming, singing and telling stories by the campfire. Peggy loved her family fiercely and protected them like a lioness. She was very close with her siblings, and they spent many good times together.  One for all and all for one! She was grateful for the life she lived; thankful for her 7 siblings, 6 children, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her siblings: Maureen Wdowiak (Frank), Edward O'Shaughnessy (Gerry), Kathleen Asteriades (Ernie) and Patricia Serra (Ron).  Her children: Marco Jr. (Cynthia), Lynn Corrigall, David (Liz), Patrick (Mary), and Edward. Grandchildren: William Corrigall (Katherine), Christine Morissette (Tyler), Regina Corey (Josh), Therese Nettleman (Jon), Dominic (Patrick Armano), Marco III (Stephani), Frank (Kate), Michael Jr., Mario, Erin, Austin, Meg and Vincent Amato. Great Grandchildren: Nolan and Maeve Corrigall; Lily and John Morissette; Sammy and Frankie Amato; Avella and Remia Nettleman ; Madeline and Odin Corey; and Gabrielle Amato.  In-Laws: Aunt Margaret Setterlund, Vera & Paul Franko, Rose Palazzi, Lucille Amato, Julie and Ron Lavoie, and Joyce O'Shaughnessy. Calling hours will be Monday August 22 nd from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the O'Brien Family Funeral Home, 33 Lamb St., South Hadley.
