Obituary

Mary E. (Welch) Manitsas, 95, died peacefully in her sleep, Friday April 26, 2024 at Mont Marie Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Holyoke, MA. Born in Rutland, VT, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Margaret (Foley) Welch. She was raised in Rutland and was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy class of 1946. She continued her education, earning a registered nursing degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Springfield, MA, class of 1949.

She married her friend and love, Demetrius "Jim" Manitsas in November of 1953. Together they made a family with their four children. "Jim preceded her in death in 1984.

Additionally, Mary has been employed for many years as a registered nurse at Providence Hospital, Holyoke Hospital and at Mount Holyoke College.

A longtime resident of South Hadley, Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who will be missed by all who knew her.

Surviving her are three daughters, Patricia Manitsas of Holyoke, Nancy Womboldt and her husband Robert of Belchertown, MaryEllen Gorman of Southampton, and a son James Manitsas and his wife Megan of Belchertown. In addition to five grandchildren, Robert Womboldt III, Amy Corbin, Karissa Sudol, Janelle Gorman and Samantha Manitsas, three great grandchildren, Kylie Corbin, Olivia Corbin and Claire Corbin, and her brother Robert Welch, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday May 3, 2024 starting with calling hours at the O'Brien Family Funeral Home, 33 Lamb St., S. Hadley from 9:00 am to 10:30 am followed by Mass in St. Theresa Church at 11:00 am. Burial in St. Rose Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the caregivers at Mont Marie Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center and the VNA Hospice Life Care of Holyoke for their exceptional care during Mary's final days.
