IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary E.
Whelihan
December 12, 1939 – November 24, 2024
Mary E. (Horne) Whelihan, 84, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 24th, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Holyoke on December 12th, she was the daughter of the late Leonard H.C. and Mary Ellen (Rohan) and stepdaughter to Marion (Mazeski) Horne who raised her from an infant and treated her as her own upon her mother's death. A 1957 graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Mary worked briefly at the Telephone Company before marrying the love of her life, Robert J. Whelihan Sr., in 1959. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Virginia, where Robert was stationed while serving in the Navy. They later returned to Holyoke and eventually settled in South Hadley, where they devoted themselves to raising their family. Together, they proudly owned Mrs. and Me Antiques and Bob's Fish and Chips on Bridge Street in South Hadley for many years. Mary cherished summers at Cape Cod, eventually finding their favorite retreat in Wells Beach, Maine. She and Bob purchased a condo there, spending countless summers making lasting memories with family.
She leaves her husband of 65 years Robert, three children Robert J. Whelihan Jr. and his wife Gail of South Hadley, Mark P. Whelihan and his wife Kathleen of Cummington and Tammy J. O'Neill of South Hadley. Her grandchildren Michael O'Neill (Brittany), Corey Whelihan (Leah), Kelsey Whelihan, Taylor Simmons (Jeremy), Mary Walsh (Scott), Kyle Whelihan, and Lydia Riccio. Her great grandchildren Brooke, Brody, Beckett, Kyrin, Shea, Lily and Liam. Her siblings Leonard Horne of Chicopee, Barbara Hamel of Holyoke and Carole Thompson and her husband Robert of Shutesbury, and her sister-in-law Shirley Doubleday of Colorado. We would also like to recognize her devoted caregiver Ann-Marie LaRosa-Stellato who she absolutely adored. She was predeceased by her brothers-in-law Philip Hamel, Paul Whelihan, Raymond Whelihan, and Guy Doubleday and sisters-in-law Shirley Whelihan, and Pauline Horne. Family and friends may meet at St. Patrick's Church, South Hadley Monday December 2nd at 11:00 am for the Funeral Mass.
