Ovide (Nick) Flannery was peacefully called home Sunday morning October 30 th . Nick was born in Boston to the late Francis and Marie (Paquette) Flannery on September 23, 1931. Nick grew up in Sommerville with his late brother Phil. He graduated from Boston College High in 1949. During the Korean War, he enlisted in the Army. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he went on to earn his Accounting Degree from Bentley College. He would go on to earn his Master's Degree in Finance / Accounting from Suffolk University. In 1966 he brought his wife and children to South Hadley, MA as he accepted a job at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He spent his entire work career in their treasury department until retirement.
Nick was an avid Red Sox fan, as well as a UMASS Football fan (where he was a season ticket holder). He loved photography, and was also a ham radio operator. Nick loved taking vacations with his family to Salisbury Beach and Wells, ME throughout the years. He was also a member of the United Veterans of Holyoke, MA, and was honored as their Veteran of the year in 2011.
Nick is survived by his wife of 64 years Elizabeth (Bette) Reddig, his children Dianne and her husband Jeff Walsh of Holyoke, Suzanne and her husband Kevin Kelly of Granby, and Robert (Bob) Flannery of Papillion, NE. Nick also leaves his grandchildren Jennifer and her husband Dan Otero of Naples, FL, Amanda and her husband Phil DiBuono of Marblehead, MA, Alyssa Flannery and her fiancée Aaron Coburn of Lincoln, NE, Margaret Walsh and her partner Michael Kittredge of Leverett, MA, Ryan Walsh of San Francisco, CA, and Emily Flannery and her partner Davis Coenen of La Vista, NE. Nick also leaves his 3 great grandchildren, Camden and Reilly DiBuono of Marblehead, MA and Brecken Coburn of Lincoln, NE. The funeral will be Monday November 7 th starting with calling hours at the O'Brien Family Funeral Home from 9:30 to 11:00 am followed by the funeral mass at St. Patrick's Church at 11:30 am. Committal service with Military Honors will follow the mass at the Mass Veteran's Cemetery in Agawam. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, at www.dav.org .
