Richard P.
Ingles
Apr 15, 1954 — Jun 28, 2026
South Hadley – Richard P. "Dick" Ingles, 72, passed away on June 28, 2026, at Baystate Medical Center.
Born on April 15, 1954, in Syracuse, New York, Dick was the son of the late James and Dorothy (Merritt) Ingles. He was raised in Canandaigua, New York.
In 1976, Dick graduated from Mount Union College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, with honors in History and Accounting and a minor in Rhetoric. He received his Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, from Syracuse University College of Law in 1979.
Dick dedicated nearly four decades to higher education and university advancement. From 1979 to 2003, he served as Associate Dean for External Relations at the Syracuse University College of Law. He then joined the University at Albany as Director of Planned Giving from 2003 to 2005, was promoted to Associate Vice President for Development from 2004 to 2006, and concluded his distinguished career as Executive Director of Development from 2006 until his retirement in 2018.
Beyond his professional achievements, he was committed to serving the LGBTQ+ community. Dick was faculty advisor to the Syracuse University Gay Student Association. He facilitated the incorporation papers for the then all-volunteer Central New York Health Crisis, which later evolved into the AIDS Task Force of Central New York, now known as ACR Health. He was also a founding member of the Syracuse Gay & Lesbian Chorus, with whom he sang from its inception in 1991 until he moved to the Capital District.
Dick collected fountain pens, Baccarat crystal, and unique artwork and loved to share his appreciation for beautiful craftsmanship with others. He owned a 1968 Mercedes Benz convertible that won Lambda Car Club’s "Diamond in the Rough” awards in 1996 and 1999. Having grown up in Finger Lakes Wine Country, he appreciated fine wine and maintained a collection of over 400 bottles. He was a voracious reader on a variety of subjects from historical biographies to sci-fi fantasy and an avid watcher of everything from classic movies to current YouTube TV series. Above all else, he cherished the life he built with his husband, Stephen. Together, they shared a love of hosting parties that included Dick’s signature cocktails, attending classical and popular music concerts and Broadway productions, and traveling with memorable trips to Provincetown, New York City, Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, and Tokyo.
Dick is survived by his beloved husband, Stephen A. Paparo; his brother, Malcolm Ingles and his wife, Vicky, their children, Alexandra Ingles and Mitchell Ingles and his wife, Ashley, and their daughter, Ava Ingles, who all live in the Tampa Bay area; and his sister, Jeanine Pawlik and her husband, Paul, of Glenville, New York; their children, Joshua Pawlik and his fiancée, Stephanie Pignato, of Webster, New York, along with Vanessa and Leah; Stephen Pawlik and his wife, Tracey, of Clarence, New York; and David Pawlik of Schenectady, New York.
Celebrations of Life in South Hadley, MA, and Syracuse, NY, are being planned for early fall and will be announced at a later date.
