IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert
Downie
April 9, 1936 – December 7, 2023
Robert Downie, 87, of South Hadley, MA, passed away peacefully at Baystate Medical Center on December 7, 2023. He was born on April 9, 1936 in Holyoke, MA.
Robert's smile illuminated the lives of those around him. He effortlessly created connections with everyone he encountered. Robert was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, for which he proudly served.
In 1967, his extraordinary courage earned him the prestigious Carnegie Hero award. That year, he fearlessly leapt into the Connecticut River, risking his own life to save a man from drowning. He exemplified the noblest qualities of humanity by selflessly and bravely extending a helping hand to save the life of another. His legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those he touched with his kindness and valor. He was a loyal employee of Flemings Trucking Company for over 40 years, prior to his retirement in 2010. In his free time, he enjoyed watching Formula One racing and spending time in the garage, tinkering with projects.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Beverly "Bunny" Downie (Green), his daughter Susan Denis (husband Michael), his son Scott Downie (wife Janice) and his son Shaun Downie. He is also survived by his granddaughters Kate Morrissey (husband Paul) and Sarah Denis, as well as his great-grandchildren Conner, Caleb, Mickey, Jhett, and Arya. He is also survived by his sister-in-laws June Monroe and Janet Kidd, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret Downie of Glasgow Scotland, his brother William Downie Jr, his sister Margaret Bain, and his beautiful granddaughter, Alexis Downie.
The Downie family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the entire staff at Baystate Medical Center for the amazing care that Robert received in his final days.
There are no calling hours. A celebration of Robert's life will be announced at a later time. Donations in Robert's memory can be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation (www.t2t.org)
